Curriculum

We define 'curriculum' as the totality of a child's experience at Weston Hills Church of England Primary School, ensuring that they are secondary school ready with the right knowledge but also with the right skills for the next stage of their educational journey.

Our Curriculum Intent

At Weston Hills C of E Primary School, we aspire to celebrate the individuality of each pupil by offering an ambitious curriculum that has equal and high expectations of all who study it. Our curriculum contains meaningful experiences that will enhance children’s learning making them curious, thirsty for knowledge and able to make meaningful connections. Our children are very much at the centre of what we teach so that they learn well and use their knowledge and skills to better understand the local, national and global contexts of their world.

Our curriculum is well planned, sequenced and maintain a logical flow throughout. Developing oracy is a key foundation of what we wish to achieve as it’s our intention to equip children with effective communication skills and language knowledge, so they can access all opportunities available to them. We also believe that reading is at the centre of learning and understand that children who read will develop a rich and varied vocabulary that will enhance their life chances. Our ambition is that all children, regardless of background, needs or ability, will be able to read and develop a lifelong love of reading as “reading for pleasure is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success.”

Our teachers have carefully selected the curriculum content that is taught to our children, so that they have sufficient time to embed and explore it. Our knowledge rich curriculum is rooted in authenticity so that learning is relevant, purposeful and well-linked. Our curriculum has been designed to intertwine the development and application of skills giving them the opportunities to practise and apply them over time, in order to master them.

Weston Hills holds our Christian Values at the heart of each pupil’s experiences. We hold a deep awareness that the opportunity to learn and understand the world through the eyes of a child happens during their primary years as such we want our pupils to leave us with foundation of becoming well rounded, knowledgeable and resilience citizens able to celebrate commonalities and differences and their place in a global society in the 21st century.

In EYFS and KS1 we use 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' as our Phonics scheme.  We use the 'Collins Big Cat Phonics' for Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' books for both guided reading and home readers.
