We have been looking at the different prehistoric eras- Archean, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. We studied the super continent Pangea, and how the shift of tectonic plates have led to the Earth we know today. We then moved to focus on the Mesozoic period, which was the time of the dinosaurs! The children had to research 3 dinosaurs from the 3 major periods of the Mesozoic period- Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. Elm class have done a fabulous job making creative and informative posters from their research.
Computing- Turtle Academy
We have been programming using Turtle Academy. We have had a play around with different codes, and refined our skills creating our initials.
Sport2Day- Speed Stacking and Flag Football
This term, Sport2Day taught us all about Speed Stacking, and how fast/high we can stack the cups. We also learnt how to play Flag Football- a mixture of Tag Rugby and American Football. Sadly the sessions was cut short due to the wet weather, so we finished off with our favourite game- dodgeball!
Science- Natural Selection
In Science, we have been looking at evolution. We were looking into Charles Darwin, and his research on Peppered Moths, and finches, whilst on the Galapagos Islands. We discovered finches from different islands ate various diets, which meant they had to evolve in order to catch their prey. We tested this theory by using different utensils (small pegs, large pegs and cooking tongs) to see how many Malteasers, Starbursts and Millions we could 'eat' (pick up) in 20 seconds. We found out the cooking tongs were the best 'beaks'
Art- Mono Printing
We have been carrying on with our Mike Barrat inspired self-portraits. We collected different leaves and objects to print onto our background, using inks and stamps.
Art- David Hockney Collages
We have been looking at portraits created by David Hockney, in which he takes multiple pictures at different angles, and creates a collage using those various images. The children really enjoyed taking pictures at different angles.
Computing- Programming
We have carried on programming using Turtle Academy. We have used 'REPEAT' codes to create various shapes- squares, triangles, all the way up to decagons! Some children even created different patterns and circles.
Topic- Biscuit Henge!
What better way to understand Stonehenge then building it out of biscuits and icing sugar. We have been looking more in detail at Skara Brae, and artefacts which have survived since prehistoric times, such as Stonehenge. We really enjoyed builiding, and eating, our creations!
Art- Peter Blake Collage
Moving on from Hockney's collages, we have looked at Peter Blakes version- a collage made up of things he liked the look of. The children had an array of different images to choose from, and will complete their final collages next week.
Music- Violins
Benchball Fun!
Maths- Square and Cube Numbers
We have been looking at square and cube numbers in Maths. We represented these numbers using cubes- as (shocker) square numbers make a square and a cube numbers makes a cube.
Topic- Cave Art
To end our 'In The Beginning' topic, we created some cave art- just as Cave People used to. Cave art was used to tell stories and inform us about prehistoric life- a time before written documents. The children made some fantastic, authentic artwork.
Computing- Designing Wrapping Paper
To end our programming unit on Turtle Academy, the class designed wrapping paper and recreated it on the computer. Very impressive designs!
When Elm Met Bob (The Tractor)
Mr Woolf was kind enough to bring his 1958 International tractor in for everyone to see. The kids were very curious and loved when Miss Woolf went for a spin!
