Science - We have been looking at short term and long term impacts of smoking, alcohol, caffeine and drugs. The children were very engaged and excited during the discussions.
We ended the session by performing the impacts of the different harmful substances.
Easter Un-cracked - We were again invited to the Spalding Baptist Church to learn more about the Easter Story. We learnt about the history behind the reason we today give chocolate eggs to represent re-birth and resurrection, we were taught an Easter rap and even were given a drink and a biscuit.
Science Day - The whole school was challenged to explore the possible ways animals may evolve to survive in biomes. Elm class were given the challenge of drawing an animal that could survive in the rainforest. They thought hard and discussed what characteristics and features would help the animal to thrive.
Colour and thickness of the fur; claws; teeth and size all could play a part in the overall survival of the new futuristic animal.
Maths - We have been looking at radius, circumference and diameter of circles. The children have been using compass' to draw circles accurately.
Legend of El Dorado for Kids | Bedtime History
Join us on an epic adventure as we unravel the mysteries of El Dorado, the legendary city of gold! In this video, we'll explore the origins of the myth and the real-life expeditions that fueled the quest for this elusive treasure.
English -- In the 16th and 17th centuries, Europeans believed that somewhere in the New World there was a place of immense wealth known as El Dorado. Their searches for this treasure wasted countless lives, drove at least one man to suicide, and put another man under the executioner's ax.
In class we have been writing our own narrative of this story using descriptive language and ensuring our targets are within the final piece.
Weeks commencing 24 & 31/03/25
RE
Art - We continued our art project on Lucy Sparrow and began creating our very own felt art.
English- We have now completed our poetry unit on Nicola Davies’ ‘Choose Love’ collection on the refugee crisis. We looked in depth about a case study of Artin Irannezhad; a 15-month refugee who sadly lost his life on his journey to the UK. We were all touched by this story, as it placed a real, human life instead of a number. We ended the unit by creating individual protest poems. The children chose to create a poem about something they feel should be protested about (eg, climate change, bullying, animal abuse, racism, homophobia, etc). The children created fantastic, authentic and heart-felt poems, some of whom confidently read their poems aloud.
The asylum substantive interview - This is the big interview in the asylum process when the Home Office interviewer will ask in detail about your reasons for claiming asylum in the UK. It can be a very long and difficult interview. The interview may last several hours and you will be asked lots of questions. You may be asked the same questions several times in different ways.
Week commencing 17/03/25
Maths- we have now finished our unit on area, perimeter and volume. We used multi-link cubes to create various shapes, and found the link between the number of cubes used and the volume of the shape. The children have persevered and worked brilliantly during this tricky topic.
English- We have continued to look at Nicola Davies’ poetry collection on the refugee crisis. One poem, called ‘The Interview’, talks about the substantive interview. We used the outline of a body to describe both how the interviewer and interviewee behaved and appeared outside the outline, and their thoughts, feelings and opinions inside the outline. It was really interesting to thin hard about how 2 different people can experience something so dramatically different.
We were lucky enough to have Charlotte from Act II Theatre Company to take us on our Bookland adventure.
The children said that they absolute blast as they had a trip to Bookland. Each class completed tasks based on 4 different books - we created live comic books for 'Dogman', acted like Greek Gods for 'Percy Jackson', went a nutty race for 'The Squirrels Who Squabbled', matched animals to their rhyming seats for 'Oi Frog' and loads more!
Charlotte Said ''all the children were so polite and enthusiastic, it was an absolute pleasure and so much fun to help foster a love of reading in young people''.
Week commencing 10/03/25
Pancake Day Race - The whole school took part in a team pancake race. Mrs Nicholls was the official race starter. She explained the rules and wished the children luck and blew the whistle to begin the race. The children stood in a line and took it in turns to run carrying a frying pan containing a pancake, KS1 ran to the end table flipped the pancake once and then ran back passing the frying pan to the next person, KS2 did the same however, they had to flip the pancake 3 times before running back. Great fun was had by all. Special Thanks to Miss Parker for organising the whole thing and also to Alfie Phillips, who due to having broken Tib and Fib was our official adjudicator. 😊

Sports2Day- Golf - This term, Mr Pickett taught the children about golf, and the children participated in various activities to practice their golfing techniques. We definitely have the potential golf pros in Elm Class.
PSHE Talk - We had Aaron from Horizon come to talk to use about drug and alcohol awareness- something we will later look at for this term’s Science topic, ‘Healthy Living’. The children were very interested in the impacts of nicotine, alcohol and caffeine has on the body and our health. Aaron brought in empty cans and bottles of beer and wine, and it’s safe to the children didn’t like the smell at all! We also discussed the difference between smoking tobacco and vaping- both of which are bad for our health.
Week commencing 3/03/25
Extended Home Study Exhibition - Well done to all of the children who created and presented some exceptionally home study projects over the half term! From a Lincoln vs Baghdad football match, to a 3-D printed light and a Lincoln Cathedral made out of Lego, everyone was impressed. Hopefully they have inspired others to make a project next time!
Topic - We have begun our new topic 'What's on the Menu?', which focuses on Tudor exploration. We started the unit by matching key Tudor figures with their portraits (which was rather tricky), and a brief overview of the different monarch and their reigns.
Computing - The children started their unit on using spreadsheets on Excel. We recorded data as a table in our books, and then translated this into a spreadsheet. We even used the 'Auto sum' button to calculate the total of everyone's data to save us time!
Science - We have started our new topic on 'Healthy Living'- we discussed what a lifestyle is and how different lifestyles might affect our health. We also conducted an experiment on how different liquids might affect our teeth (represented by eggs). We placed the eggs in black coffee, milk, water, Redbull, diet coke and vinegar, and noted down any internal and external changes to the egg. We saw the acid from the vinegar dissolved the egg shell, and the sugar from the Redbull created a fuzzy, bubbly layer on the shell. We agreed water made no difference to the egg, and was ultimately the best liquid for both the egg and your teeth.
PSHE- Anti-Bullying Performance and Workshop (Mark and the Unmarked):
We were lucy to have the 'BoxClever' Theatre group come to school and perform a play on anti-bullying. The performance was non-verbal, so we all had to think carefully about what the actors were portraying. The performance was then followed by a workshop, where we discussed how bullying was presented through different games- primarily through people being left out deliberately and accidentally.
Week Commencing 03/03/25
