Well done to all of the children who created and displayed their fantastic projects based on last term's topic 'Arctic Explorers'. We had a range of Arctic and Antarctic settings, Lego creations, documentary-style videos and research on animals.

Art- The Human Form
We have started out new unit on 'The Human Form' in Art. We began by looking at the work of Antony Gormley, and discussed how specific pieces link to the human form. Gormley primarily creates sculptures, therefore the children used clay to make small human sculptures.
Sport2Day- Kho Kho and Kabaddi
We had Sport2Day in to teach the children about Kho Kho and Kabaddi:
Kabaddi- The objective of the game is for a single player on offence, called a raider, to run into the opposing team part of the field and tag out as many of their defenders as possible. When they cross onto the other team’s side, the raiders repeat ‘kabaddi, kabaddi’.
The player has to return in its own half of the field in a single breath, without being tackled by the defenders. Points are given for each player that the raider successfully tagged, while the other teams earns points if they can stop the raider. Also, the players are out of the game if they are tackled or tagged, if they step out of the field or if they stop chanting, but can be brought back for each point scored by their team for the same actions.
World Book Day 2026
We had such a fantastic range of costumes this year; from Cat in the Hat, The Three Little Pigs, Where's Wally and characters from the Dork Diaries, the children all looked fantastic!
Well done to William as well for winning the best costume in Elm Class- he really committed to becoming The Lorax!
Science Week 2026
This year's theme for British Science Week was 'Curiosity- What's Your Question?', so Elm class decided to investigate- 'Which fizzy drink produces the biggest reaction when Mentos are added?'.
We tested Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi Max, 7UP, Fanta and Dr Pepper, and discussed how reactions may differ (eg, sugar/caffeine content).
It's safe to say we all had fun, and concluded Dr Pepper had the largest reaction. This is because the rough surface of the Mentos provide many tiny places for bubbles to form. Carbon dioxide rapidly escapes, and the pressure pushes the liquid up and out.

English- Newspapers
We have started our new unit on newspapers in English this week. The children began by looking at real examples of newspapers, identifying key features throughout them. We then started to plan our own newspaper report, based on the first Olympics in Ancient Greece. Next week, we will be drafting and publishing our final reports on the laptops.
Corey's Last Day!
We sadly said goodbye to Corey, but we wish him all the best at his new school! Good luck Corey!
Topic- The First Olympics
We have been looking at the first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece this week. We looked at why is created (to honour Zeus) and the different activities which took place across the 5-day event (eg, religious practices, parades, feasts and sporting activities). Afterwards, the children were split into teams and competed in Elm Class' own Ancient Greek Olympic Games. We had 5 events based on those form the first Olympics- Javelin, Discus, Last Tag Standing (Wrestling/Boxing), Sprinting and Long Jump. Safe to say everyone was very competitive- just like the Ancient Greeks!
Art- Wire Sculptures
For the past few Art lessons, Elm class have been looked at Alberto Giacometti's interpretations of the 'The Human Form'. Giacometti created 'Plinth People'- human sculptures made out of wire, then decorated with fabrics. The children have been creating their own 'Plinth People' after sketching poses and positions they want their person to be in.

Science
We have been looking at how to live a healthy lifestyle. After looking the the heart and Circulatory System earlier in the term, then discussing the importance of exercise for out health, we conducted an experiment looking at how exercise can effect our heart rate, and again after running 5 laps of the playground. Not surprisingly, our heart rates increased, as more oxygen is needed to power our working muscles.
We have also looked this term at healthy, balanced diets, the importance of hydration, and the impact of drugs, alcohol, smoking and caffeine.
Topic- Ancient Greece
Throughout this term, we have been looking at all things Ancient Greek. We have looked at where Greece is, and the ancient city states. We then compared two of these city states (Athens and Sparta), then moved onto the first Olympics (see above). Alexander the Great's legacy was next, and we concluded with legacies of Ancient Greece (eg, philosophers, Olympics, medicine, science, maths, theatre and democracy).
