Term 5

Oak Class Extended Home School Project

Wednesday 21st May 2025

Today Mrs Stanley and Mrs Fletcher took 12 children (6 year one's and 6 year two's) to participate in the 'Mini Olympics' at the Holbeach Hub.

The children were fantastic and their teamwork was outstanding!

We are very proud to reveal that they achieved 2nd place!  All the children that attended will get a silver medal and a certificate to take home.

Wednesday 14th May 2025

Today we had a visit from Izzy who works for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.  She came into school to work with the Year 1 children about being safe.  We learnt about pavements, kerbs and roads, plus how to cross a road safely.  We talked about not being able to hear electric cars until they are very close to us and about holding our grown ups hand on the path and when out on the grown up walks to make sure the adult is near the kerb and not the child!

The Year 2 children put on their high visibility jackets and we went outside of school looking for vehicles and hazards.  The children learned to walk around the carpark using the paths all the way around and not not walking straight through the middle of the carpark.  We talked about the double yellow lines and why you should not park on the bend into school as it is a dangerous obstruction!

We stopped, looked, listened and thought before crossing the road safely around Weston Hills.

Thursday 8th May 2025

Today we celebrated Mrs Stanley's birthday and the 80th anniversary of VE day.

We watched VE day in London in 1945 and listened to Winston Churchill's broadcast.  We then went into the hall where Rodger and Diane talked to us about World War 2.

They showed us a gas rattle, a baby gas mask, a Mickey Mouse gas mask and an adult gas mask.  We saw a fire hose, a scoop, a Wardens tin helmet and a car headlamp cover for the blackouts.  We were also shown a ration book, an example of a 'sweetcone' which had to last a child for 7 days, newspapers that the children used to collect to be recycled and a certificate that the King made to celebrate all the hard work that the brave children did in the war.

Back in the classroom we enjoyed cake and squash whilst watching the RAF flypast!

Thursday 1st May

In PE we went outside to do some team building activities in the cool shade.  We were each given a farm animal and then we had to find the same animals without talking.  The 'pigs' were the only group to manage this.

Next we moved through the hoop until the person at the front got back to the front.  This activity was also tricky, if we were not much of a team player.

Wednesday 30th April

Today we went on a tree and plant hunt around the school grounds.  We found daisies, dandelions, silver birch trees, alder trees, clover, apple trees and willow trees.

We then enjoyed the story 'The Tiny Seed' sitting in the cool breeze on the school field.

Our topic this term is 'Growing Green'.

We are learning the parts of a plant, if a plant is healthy or not and what plants need to grow.

We are doing an Oak Class experiment to investigate what plants need to grow and to be healthy.  We placed one Pansy in the window with sunlight, soil and water.  Another Pansy was placed inside the fridge, one will have no water and another was placed in a dark cupboard.

We chopped all the flowers and buds off one Pansy and one Pansy had no soil.

We will check them everyday to see what happens!

Welcome back to Term 5, we hope you had a lovely Easter break!
